Hormone Balance Testing
In order to provide you with the best possible outcome, certain clinical tests are required. These may involve collection of blood, saliva, urine and/or stool. Below is a list of possible testing we may recommend at your visit. Your insurance may cover some of this testing. However many functional labs do not take insurance or require a higher than usual upfront payment. For complete pricing information, contact Sheila Vuckovic at .
If you need to return to the office to complete your testing, please allow us to schedule a specific lab appointment. To ensure the utmost accuracy, please read all instructions contained in lab kits.
Saliva Hormone Testing - Saliva tests look at the sex hormones such as progesterone, testosterone, DHEA and all 3 types of estrogen produced by the body. Cortisol (an important stress hormone) can also be evaluated in saliva. Saliva may be collected in 1 day, or certain days of the cycle to ensure a more accurate representation of hormone fluctuations.
➢ PURPOSE - Saliva testing has several advantages over blood. One advantage is that it can give us a progesterone-to-estrogen ratio, which is important when considering estrogen dominance as a cause of specific hormone issues. It can also provide insight into hormone production at different parts of your cycle. It is the best way to see how well the hormone therapy is being absorbed by the tissues, and it is the best way to determine if the hormone therapy is being dosed correctly. Saliva is the only way to determine if your cortisol pattern is normal.
➢ DETAILS – This kit will be completed at home. You must be off of all hormone pills and creams for 12 hours. Troches need to be discontinued for 36 hours. If you are still having a period, you will spit on day 19, 20 or 21. If your cycle is irregular, take the test any day you are not bleeding. Please read all test instructions carefully. If you are doing a rhythm hormone test, please ask your coordinator for specific instructions.
➢ PAYMENT – We use Genova and Access labs for these tests. The appropriate lab will be determined based on your insurance carrier.

Blood Hormone Testing - We will look at sex hormones such as estradiol (one type of estrogen), progesterone, free and total testosterone and DHEA (a cousin of testosterone produced by the adrenal glands). This panel will also look at TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), FSH (follicle stimulation hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone), pregnenolone (the precursor to all the other sex hormones) and SHBG (sex hormone binding globulin).
➢ PURPOSE - This panel is generally done to determine if you have reached menopause or to determine if metabolic syndrome or PCOS could be causing symptoms or infertility. Blood hormone levels are generally not recommended for those on birth control pills or any other kind of hormone therapy (with the exception of thyroid medication) because those medications may skew the results.
➢ DETAILS – This is a non-fasting blood draw done in our office. You must be off of any synthetic hormones for at least 30 days for accurate results.
➢ PAYMENT - We use a variety of labs for these tests, depending on your insurance. We cannot guarantee that these labs will be completely covered. It is best to check with your insurance company before drawing these labs.

➢ PURPOSE - Common complaints relating to poor thyroid function include cold hands and feet, hair loss, constipation, weight gain or loss, racing heart, anxiety, and insomnia.
