Micronutrients, Telomeres, and Healthy Longevity
What is a micronutrient?
Micronutrients are the vitamins, minerals and other substances that we consume through our everyday meals. As our typical meal is digested, these important substances are used to "run" our bodies. Without the appropriate nutrients our bodies cannot make chemicals to think, walk, run, or live. If we have a suboptimal nutrient status, we will function at a less than perfect level, perform poorly on a daily basis, and age prematurely. Maximizing the use of these nutrients in the one body we have will enable us to live the fullest, healthiest life we can.
Why are they important to my health and longevity?
One of the major determinants of our overall health and aging process is the length of our telomere caps. Telomeres are the caps that protect our DNA and enable each of our cells to perform at its optimal capacity. Just as the laces on our sneakers will fray when the plastic caps are broken, so will our DNA. We know the telomere caps tend to shorten with each cell division as we age. However, if the cells are bathed in the optimal environment this shortening can be minimized. Longer telomeres are linked to less disease and healthier cellular function as we age. Maintaining adequate balanced micronutrients is an essential part of telomere health. Stress reduction, healthy sleep habits, stable blood sugar, balanced hormones, and maintenance of muscle mass are some of the ways telomere shortening can be minimized.
With a simple blood test your telomere length can be determined. The length of your telomeres will allow us to determine your biological age versus your chronological age. This test can be paired with your micronutrient results enabling our wellness team to create a personalized plan to minimize your telomere shortening.
How is Spectracell’s Advanced Clinical Testing different than a regular blood test done in my routine doctor visit?
Most routine assessments involve a serum blood draw only, which does not give us any information of the intracellular micronutrient composition. Unfortunately, the sample of circulating serum blood is only a snapshot of the nutrient levels at that moment in time. Additionally, cells in the body will sacrifice micronutrients so that the serum blood levels remain normal. Therefore, that simple blood test does NOT establish your overall health picture.
As opposed to this typical, serum blood evaluation, SpectraCell Labs will actually grow cultures of your white blood cells in a patented media dish, removing each micronutrient from the media to test your cell’s status. A healthy cell should be able to call upon its internal reserves, and continue to grow; nutrient deficient cells will not grow adequately. With knowledge of specific deficiencies, we can recommend the personalized diet changes and supplements that are necessary for your cells to function.
